An unforgettable adventure in Wolin open-air museum

Yule app aims to create an engaging space on the grounds of Wolin’s open-air museum, where digital product is combined with tradition and the tangible history of the early medieval city. The interactive guide offers three different scenarios with an engaging narrative to explore the medieval settlement.

Education through play

We believe that education through play is the best way to ignite curiosity and effectively transfer knowledge to the audience. Having this in mind, we designed a series of outdoor games that teach while the players are having fun. “Where is Mjolnir” for example, is a game that requires searching for rune inscriptions, photographing them in the app and putting them in a correct order to spell out Thor’sname. Through this engaging challenge players learn more about the history of the runic alphabet and how and by whom it was used.

Yule uses a system of beacons placed in the open-air museum to initiate field games and challenges. They have been created specifically for the open-air museum in Wolin to use AR technology and markers hidden in the settlement. Thanks to this technological setup, we received full freedom in planning tasks using the fantastic infrastructure of the Wolin open-air museum.

Challenges

Getting to know your partner

For us, it was very interesting to get to get to know and to understand the community of the early medieval history reconstruction. The challenge was to combine our idea for an interactive app with the tradition and “unplugged” life that defines the community. Our efforts were focused on coming up with a way to use the phone during the tour and at the same time not to distract from the scenery and history of the open-air museum that surrounds visitors.

Process

Project pitch and planning

Since we were the ones looking for a partner to build this product, we had to think not only about the app itself. We started by preparing a pitch, researching available technology and assembling the core team for the project. When we were ready to pitch the idea to our potential partners in Wolin, we went there in person to work out the details with the Slavic and Viking Center management team and representatives of the city of Wolin. Together we agreed on an action plan and approved a preliminary budget for the project.

In the early stages of the project, we received substantive support from the Institute of History at the Silesian University in Katowice, which proved invaluable and crucial to our further work. We identified the technological background we needed for the project and were ready for a joint project workshop to help us improve communication and coordination between the project teams: facilitators (Slavic and Viking Center), knowledge (University of Silesia) and execution (Lagom).

Discovery sprint

In a rather broad group, we met in Wolin for a 3-day workshop, during which we established the main priorities and how we will measure the success of the project. We also determined the content of the application and planned the tour paths. The workshop resulted in an MVP prototype of the app, which we planned to test at the open-air museum in the following months to find out how potential audiences would evaluate our interactive guide.

Product MVP

The product’s MVP was planned out to consist of core features of the application such as historical content, navigation and tour paths. We also designed one full scenario that we wanted to test out with visitors in the open-air museum.

The main flow of the application

By detailing the application’s interface elements during the workshop, we knew exactly what we wanted to test out. This allowed us to design a prototype very quickly, focusing mainly on the attractive layer of the features defined and laid out beforehand.

Application interface

We wanted the feel and look of the app to resemble the mix of early medieval themes and aesthetics (Slavic and Old Scandinavian motifs) and a modern and intuitive interface, allowing users to find their way around the app quickly and easily use its contents.

Illustrations

We also collaborated with talented illustrators who created fantastic graphic elements and illustrations for the app, combining tradition with a modern form of depicting the Slavic and Scandinavian architecture and culture.
